Visiting Isla Holbox will feel like an exotic escape in comparison to your typical Cancun or Play del Carmen stay. Located just North of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Holbox Island feels laidback, grungy, remote, and exclusive all at the same time. Like a secret that you know is bound to get out in time. Those who knew Tulum years ago say that this island is on its way to becoming the new Tulum. This 26 mile stretch of land in the Gulf of Mexico is known for being a laid back island with no cars, and its actually one of the best places in the world to go swimming with whale sharks. When I visited it wasn’t the right time of year for this, but I will be back to cross that off my bucket list in the near future!
How To Get To Isla Holbox
The best way to get to Isla Holbox from the states is to fly into Cancun National Airport and to take a car to Chiquila Port which is a 2 hour drive from the Cancun airport. You can also rent a car and park in a lot near the port but if you get there and there are no spots available your are SOL.
Once you get to port of Chiquila you will be taking a 30 min ferry ride to Holbox! The ferry schedule can be found here. You purchase your tickets for the ferry at the window once you arrive. The ticket will cost you $10 USD each way. They take pesos or card.
Language and Currency
It will be harder to get around without knowing Spanish when visiting Isla Holbox than it is when visting Cancun. This Island is not as touristy so keep that in mind and brush up on your Spanish as it will be very helpful!
Most establishments will only accept pesos although some do take card. Be sure to to bring plenty of cash before heading to Isla Holbox since there aren’t many ATM’s on the island and I hear that there is a good chance that if you find one that they will be empty.
Getting Around Isla Holbox
As I mentioned, there aren’t cars on Isla Holbox. The main ways of getting around are gona be walking, biking, or taking a golf cart taxi.
When you arrive by ferry you will find many taxi golf carts waiting for you by the port. The standard rate for a taxi ride is $100 pesos from the town to a hotel, and vise versa. You can rent a golf cart by the hour or for the day if you wanted to however, because the island does get flooded when it sees rain it might be hard for you to navigate through the flooded streets. During my visit some areas were so flooded that I was told to lift my feet because the water does come up over the tires, so unless you are an experience golf cart driver I wouldn’t recommend renting one. Instead opt to walk or pay for the taxi fee instead!
Where To Stay On Isla Holbox
Mystique Holbox
During my Visit I was hosted by Mystique Holbox. This eco-friendly 5 star boutique property has the nicest private beach and pool that I saw while on Isla Holbox, along with all the comforts and luxuries that you could wish for on a remote Island.
Casa Las Tortugas
Casa Las Tortugas is another boutique property that you should consider booking. This properties aesthetic is very boho and Instagramy and honestly looks like something that belongs in Tulum.
Things To Do On Isla Holbox

Always be sure to do your research and make sure to pick an ethical tour guide.

Holbox is known for having vibrant street art sprinkled throughout island. Make your way to the city center and simply walk around the streets of Holbox and you will stumble upon beautiful murals.
Holbox Bioluminescence Tour
From June to September you are able to book a tour to visit the southern side of the island and witness the bioluminescent sea. There are few places in the world where you can witness this reaction and Holbox is one of them!
Visit Flamingos On Punta Mosquito
If you make your way to Punta Mosquito you will be able to see wild flamingos among other beautiful birds. Unlike the flamingos in Aruba, these are not domicile, they are wild and should not be approached.
Where to Eat and Drink on Isla Holbox
Basico
One of the trendier eateries in town and one of the few places you will find meat on the island! The menu, design, and service at Basico were all above the standard of the Island making this place my favorite. I’d highly recommend Basico for a special occasion dinner!
Roots Pizza Holbox
The seafood is where it’s at on Isla Holbox, but the star of the show is their famous Lobster pizza! Roots is known for having the best lobster pizza on the island so if you are going to try it come here for it. The space is also super fun too.
Tierra Mia
This was my favorite coffee shop on the island. The lattes were both delicious and strong! I also tried one of their bagel sandwiches and they were very good!
Holbox Foodie Market
Holbox Foodie Market is a very Instagramable food stall that’s located in the downtown area of Isla Holbox. This is the perfect spot to pick up some light bites for lunch if you are out exploring the city center! They had a taco window and pizza window among other options for visitors to enjoy.
Coquitos
Coquitos was by far my favorite place to drink on the water! This beach bar is run by the same group as Basico. The music and decor really made this place a stand out. I had the best margarita here and also tried their patatas bravas and they were delicious. There is no minimum here, and all patrons get access to their pool as well.
Carolinda Beach Club
Carolinda Beach Club is probably the most Instagramable place to drink on Isla Holbox. This spot offers delicious and beautiful drinks and is known for having the double swings that hang over the ocean.
Rosa Mexicano
Rosa Mexicano, located in the downtown area was my most authentic dining experience had while on Isla Holbox. Truthfully, this island has many trendy eateries but my desire for authentic Mexican food was only satisfied with my visit to Rosa Mexicana. I enjoyed their vegetarian enchiladas. The red sauce served on this dish was so simple yet so delicious! I highly recommend visiting this spot while you are on the Isla Holbox!
