As soon as I booked my ticket to Ireland I knew I had to make it a point to visit the stunning Cliffs of Moher.
Visiting the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin is relatively simple, and can easily be done as a day trip to be back in Dublin by Dinner! This is a must for anyone visiting Ireland for more than a day!
How To Get To the Cliffs Of Moher From Dublin
You have two options if you are trying to plan a day trip from Dublin to the Cliffs Of Moher. You can rent a car and make the 3 hr and 40 min drive to the Western coast of Ireland yourself to view the cliffs, or you can opt to book one of the many day tours from Dublin.
I will first say, that I am typically NOT a tour person. However, I wanted to have a relaxing trip and the thought of a 3+ hour road trip while having to drive on the opposite side of the road (which I have never done before) just didn’t sound appealing. In the end I opted to book a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher through Wild Rover Day Tours and I’m so glad I did!
Day Trip from Dublin to The Cliffs Of Moher with Wild Rover Day Tours
The 12 hour tour included visiting the Cliffs Of Moher, a scenic drive along the Wild Atlantic Way, and a stop to visit the City of Galway before returning to Dublin. The day started bright and early with pick up at 6:30 am in Dublin city center.
As soon as we got on the road my tour guide started sharing bits on Irish History and culture. This was exactly what I was hoping for when I signed up for the tour.
As we made our way towards Ireland’s Western coast we enjoyed the view as we passed the beautiful country side and spotted several herds of sheep and horses along the way. We drove for about 4 hours until we reached the Cliffs of Moher.
Guide To Visiting The Cliffs Of Moher
Buying Your Ticket to visit the Cliffs Of Moher
To enter the Cliffs of Moher you must purchase a ticket. If you are planning to visit the Cliffs on your own you can purchase your tickets in advance for 4 Euro, or at the gate for 8 Euro. My entrance fee to the Cliffs of Moher was included in the price of the tour through Wild Rover. Your ticket will include access to all public areas of the visitor center building, all external areas of the visitor zone including the Cliffs of Moher pathways and platforms, and parking for the day.
Where to go to Get the Best Photos at The Cliffs Of Moher
To get the best photos of the Cliffs Of Moher you are going to want to head right towards O’brien’s Tower after you clear the entrance. This will allow you to get the iconic views you are envisioning of the Cliffs.
I recommend getting some shots right when you turn right, and some at Obrien’s Tower since it is the highest viewing point at the Cliffs Of Moher sitting at around 700 ft. If you wanted to climb the tower you can purchase tickets to do so at the visitors center for $4 Euro.
How Much Time Do I Need At The Cliffs Of Moher?
We were given 2 hours to explore the Cliffs as part of our day trip with Wild Rover Tours and it was plenty of time to take great photos without anyone in our shots, and enjoy the Cliffs at a leisurely pace! It was very windy and misty when I visited so I didn’t stay out the entire two hours. There is restaurant, Souvenir shop, and restrooms inside of the visitors center so if the weather isn’t cooperating you can always hangout inside and warm up with a soup after you’ve had your fair share of the Cliffs!
Visiting The City Of Galway
Galway was very charming with plenty of boutique shops and cute cafes to be enjoyed. I only visited for about 2 hours which was plenty to get a good feel for what Galway had to offer. If you are looking to purchase a claddagh ring, Galway is a great place to do so as there were many jewelers offering tradition Irish designs. Other great sites to add to your list if you are planing to stop in Galway are visiting Eyre Square, Quay Street, and Galway Bay.
